Alameda Family Services is a non-profit agency providing comprehensive services to youth, families and children in the City of Alameda.

Alameda Head Start/Early Head Start

Alameda Head Start/Early Head Start is a federally funded program that provides comprehensive services to qualifying pregnant women and families with children birth to 5 years of age.  Child development, health and family support services are provided through a variety of program options designed to meet the individual needs of low-income and at-risk children and families.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Child Development Services Manager, the Center Director is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of Head Start/Early Head Start childcare.  The Center Director will work with program management and direct service staff in developing and implementing systems that support quality service delivery, ensures the safety of children, and fosters parent engagement in accordance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards, State of California, Community Care Licensing, and other associated regulations.

General Responsibilities

  1. Oversee the daily functions of the Head Start/Early Start Center including Site Supervisors, Assistant Site Supervisors, direct service staff, coaches, consultants and volunteers. 
  2. Oversee the maintenance of environmental safety including parking areas, pedestrian crossings, entry ways, classrooms, and outdoor play areas.
  3. Ensure maintenance of the required adult-child ratios, approve direct service staff leave requests, manage staff placements, submit requests for substitute teachers and provide coverage as needed.
  4. Ensure that child development activities are in keeping with the program’s curriculum and philosophy (Creative Curriculum, Anti-Bias Curriculum and Developmentally Appropriate Practices) and reflect and respect the individual development and diversity of children, families and staff.
  5. Conduct classroom observations, facilitate referrals and assist in coordinating support services provided by interns, consultants, and specialists working with the agency, program and/or child.
  6. Support parent, family and community engagement, in all aspects of developing, implementing and evaluating the classroom and child development activities as appropriate.
  7. Work with local agencies to coordinate appropriate services to children, including children with disabilities and special needs.
  8. Work with, contribute to, and serve as a member of a multi-disciplinary team by encouraging and facilitating problem solving strategies; accepting supervision, and working closely with direct service staff, program management, agency administration, community partners, coaches
  9. Conduct classroom observations, facilitate referrals and assist in coordinating support services provided by interns, coaches, consultants, and specialists.
  10. Ensure timely completion of required paperwork, including curriculum development; screenings, assessments and referrals; goals and progress notes; children’s files; database and tracking reports; home visits and parent meetings and conferences; in-kind documentation; time sheets and equipment and supply inventories.

Knowledge, Skill, and Experience

  • Must meet Community Care Licensing requirements for a fully qualified Site Supervisor and a minimum of an AA Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field; BA Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience with children ages birth to five years. 
  • Must have a working knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and experience working with children with disabilities and special needs.
  • Experience supervising others preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and parents both orally and verbally.
  • Understanding of  Community Care Licensing and Head Start Program Performance Standards
  • Computer skills and knowledge required; use of ChildPlus and/or Learning Genie preferred.
  • Ability and desire to work as part of a team in a culturally diverse environment
  • Positive, professional and courteous work demeanor.
  • Second language skills are desirable.
